There are many places to visit in the Philippines whereas it is mandatory for the tourists to stay careful. It is generally a very safe destination for tourists whereas small crimes are everywhere in the world.

  • It is a poverty-ridden country so pickpocketing and scamming are common. Take care of your belongings in public places and tourist spots. Mostly pickpockets are children. Police also get bribed easily so it is better to be careful instead of getting involved in any hassle.
  • Overall it is very safe, especially for female solo travelers. However, it is advised to stay away from isolated and bad lit areas late in the night to stay safe from snatching or robbery.
  • Do not disrespect or be rude to an elderly person. People in the Philippines never call their elders by their first name.
  • Filipinos are very proud of their country and the things they own. They expect tourists to be respectful of their culture and country.
  • Locals are friendly and welcoming whereas they become very un-confrontational in case of any argument. Try to remain calm and pleasant in any situation. They say ‘no’ indirectly like ‘I am not sure, I will try or we will see’ etc.
  • Try to keep your Philippines bucket list flexible in case of harsh weather, festival, transportation, or change of plan.
  • Do not discuss religion because most of the people are religious. The majority is Catholic and respect the teachings of their elders. Do not argue about any other religion or atheism especially with an elderly person. Divorce is illegal in the country. Talk about sexual contraception offend many people.
  • It is much cheaper to buy things from the Philippines as compared to Europe and the US whereas it is not that cheap. Bargain with the cab driver or shopkeeper to a limited extent. Try to avoid getting indulged into any heated argument. If you do not agree with pricing, then decline politely and move on.
