Mt. Mayon, a 20 million-year-old active volcano

Legazpi tourist spots: The home of active Mt. Mayon

Looking for top adventure tourism in the Philippines? Legazpi City is the answer. One of the reasons why I decided to visit Legazpi is to see the popular tourist spots,  and its best attraction Mt. Mayon. The volcano is renowned for its “perfect cone” because of its symmetric conical shape. Legazpi City wouldn’t be called the City of fun and adventure for nothing.

Legazpi is located in the province of Albay in the Bicol region, this city is home to Mt. Mayon, a 20 million-year-old active volcano.  You’ll see Mt Mayon as a stunning backdrop to the vibrant city and is usually the first thing that anyone notices upon arrival downtown. It’s everywhere you go in Legazpi and all I want is to get close as I could. There are so many ways to get a bit more closely with this insane natural wonder. Since it’s an active Volcano, You’ll see a puff of smoke coming from its peak. I did not just let it part of my curiosity to see Mayon Volcano up close.

Join me as I explore the best Legazpi City tourist spots:

Mayon Volcano ATV Tour and Adventure

This is the ultimate adventure that you should not miss as you come to visit the Philippines. The Mayon Volcano ATV ride is the best ATV experience by far. It’s an exhilarating activity that’s not for the fainthearted but surely a must try and guarantee that you will truly enjoy. Embrace yourself as you will experience the fun and adventure as you see beautiful sceneries around while gazing at the beauty of Mayon Volcano as you ride through the forests, rice fields, rivers, bumpy rough roads, and thousand of volcanic rocks along these exciting trails.

The ride was very challenging, It’s kinda scary on my part because I don’t even know how to ride a motorbike. What gives me the courage to give it a try is because I am about to see Mt. Mayon and ATV is a 4 wheeled ride and I am up for the adventure. The driving experience is Nerve-wracking, at least for me. I didn’t have enough muscle power to do so which makes it hard for me to steer the wheel in any direction. There was a point that I was about to give up and just do the same as what others are doing, ask for help to continue the driving for them instead, because swear it’s not going to be an easy ride.

Made by the fury of Mayon Volcano

Though the guides are really doing their best to keep you safe, they are the ones who will go first to guide you which way to pass that is safe and a little bit easy, but still you are the one who’s in charge of your own steering wheel. You gotta be more courageous to move forward passing on to big rocks in the river, deep muddy roads. The entire trail is made by nature – made by the fury of Mayon Volcano.

That was a fun experience that taught me a lot of lessons in life. We are the one who is in charge of our life. Do it at your own pace, with no pressure so long as you keep moving no matter what the obstacle right in front of you. Enjoy the journey, there might be times that you feel like you won’t be able to do it but with determination and mind right mindset sticking with the goal that you want to achieve. You will be able to make it.

So there, I was able to see Mt Mayon on a closer look and get to step on those Lava rocks formation. I really wanted to climb the top of the Volcano but during our visit, we were told that it was not safe to do so. Well, maybe next time. To attest to how famous this activity is, this activity has been already featured in National Geographic.

Cagsawa Ruins Park

Cagsawa Ruins Park is one of the historical places in Albay where you can enjoy the view of Mayon Volcano. This was the Cagsawa church before the strongest and deadliest eruption of the Mayon Volcano. Most of the people sought refuge inside the church thinking that the solid foundation of the structure could withstand pyroclastic flows but they were wrong. An estimated 2000 people were killed. Now only the belfry remains standing with time. It is amazing to see the power of the volcano when you see the destruction it dealt out.

Vera Falls

Vera Falls is located in the municipality of Malinao, Albay. Enjoy the refreshingly cold water of the waterfalls after a long trip. Indeed the water here is so cold, perfect for splashing on a hot day. The place is surrounded by good vegetation and trees. What I liked there is that its natural beauty is sustained.

Sigpit Falls and Quitinday Underground River

Feeling like going on a city break you can explore Sigpit Falls and Quitinday Underground River. Go for a swim in the water of Sigpit Falls and try the bamboo raft adventure to a 150 meter long Quitinday underground river.

Quitinday Hills

Enjoy the breathtaking view when you’re on top of Quitinday Hills. They are scattered giant green mountains with Mayon Volcano as the backdrop adds a dramatic view to the hills. What I like about going here is the adventure that you have to go through. Bumpy rough road ahead that makes it more fun and challenging.

Sumlang Lake

Try kayaking in the clear water of Sumlang Lake as you enjoy its beauty and calmness. You can also try fishing, rafting, and water biking. Another great spot to visit for you to chill and relax where you get to see a unique close-up view of Mayon Volcano.

Daraga Church

Daraga Church a beautiful old Baroque-style church that has its unique white structure made from volcanic rock. This church is situated on top of a hill above the bustling town of Legazpi with a clear view of Mt Mayon as the background. This is why many tourists would love to come to see Daraga Church. And This is the oldest church in town.

There are still plenty of tourist spots to discover and explore here in Legazpi. The longer you stay the more memorable your trip will be. It’s not a surprise that Legazpi is part of The Most Beautiful Places in the Philippines

I came here for one reason. But it came as a surprise that Legazpi has offered me beautiful tourist spots. Indeed exceed my expectations. It has a ton of historical and cultural sites, beautiful landscapes, scenic mountains, surprisingly panoramic views, gigantic lakes, refreshing falls, and action-packed adventures to discover. Oh, not to mention their mouthwatering food and flavorsome delicacies are also a must-try. You should be considering Legazpi now as part of your next adventure by this time.
